PEI-CHEN CHEN

The Taiwanese-Canadian pianist Dr. Pei-Chen Chen has received numerous awards throughout North America and Asia as a solo pianist, chamber musician, piano educator, and researcher. Her debut was at the age of fifteen with the Hsin-Tien Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5. Pei-Chen is an enthusiastic soloist and is equally passionate about chamber music as well.

As an active performer, she has held many recitals and chamber music concerts in Taiwan and Canada. As an active performer, she has won awards at several international ensemble competitions including the North West International Piano Ensemble Competition, Ohio International Piano Duet & Duo Competition, and United States International Duo Piano Competition with Y. Lee. Pei-Chen is also passionate about promoting Canadian piano music to younger generations. Recently she recorded Northern Lights Piano Duets: An Exploration of Canadian Piano Music with M. Xiong at the Orford Musician in Residency and performed Canadian composer - Cecilia Livingston's works at the Banff Musician in Residency.
As a piano educator, she is the Teacher Trainer in the Piano Pedagogy Program at the University of Toronto (U of T), leading the training of new teachers. She has also taught the Piano Skills for Professional Musicians and Teachers course at U of T. In addition to her roles at U of T, Pei-Chen is a co-founder and director of MUSIC INSIDEOUT, the music school based in Toronto. Her students have received outstanding results from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations and have won many national and international competitions.
Since 2016, Pei-Chen has actively trained in Dalcroze Eurhythmics and has been applying this unique approach to her teaching and research. She was recently awarded the Mitacs Globalink Research Award and a Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship through the Government of Canada for her research: Off the Bench, Sing and Play: Lived Experiences in Dalcroze-Inspired Piano Lessons for Amateur Adults. She also won the 5th International Conference of Dalcroze Studies' Selma Odom Prize for Best Student Paper. Pei-Chen is also an active lecturer that gives workshop and presentations in international conferences and local community, include Music Teachers National Association, Frances Clark Center, NCKP, Piracicaba International Piano Festival.
Outside of academia, Pei-Chen is also involved in various music organizations and passionate about community outreach and volunteer works. She is a certified piano teacher of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association and RCM, and is an active adjudicator for RCM examinations. Over the past 12 years, she has also been providing concerts, master classes, volunteer mentorship, and adjudication for competitions at various community venues and music festivals. She was the President of the U of T Piano Pedagogy Student Group, Pei-Chen organizes different opportunities for piano pedagogy students to explore various teaching experiences through workshops, master class exchanges, and student recitals.
Pei-Chen received her Doctoral of Musical Arts (DMA) and Master's degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from U of T under the tutelage of Dr. James Parker and Dr. Midori Koga. She also received the Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Music Education through RCM.
