It has been an absolute privilege to have someone of Pei-Chen’s expertise teaching our children. Not only did their playing improve almost immediately, but their confidence improved as well. Pei-Chen’s serious approach to music success inspired one of our daughters to successfully participate at Music Festivals and concerts. Furthermore, Pei-Chen ensured our daughter is thoroughly prepared for her Royal Conservatory Exams. I would highly recommend Pei-Chen’s teaching methods, expertise, and dedication to any student.

My son started piano lessons at the age of 4 and has been taking lessons with Ms. Pei-Chen since he was 6.
She is a great teacher and she gets my son's personality and gives him a better approach to his lessons. My son has made amazing progress since he started taking lessons with her. We are so glad we decided to travel to Toronto to take her lessons.

Our son has excelled not only in musicality but also performance and confidence under Pei-Chen’s tutelage. He appreciates her balanced approach towards preparation for Conservatory exams while still having fun with his interests in ragtime and jazz music. The proof of her pedagogy is in the advanced standing he has achieved from First Class Honours on piano exams to gold medals at music festivals.
Even more enjoyable, has been the opportunities Pei Chen invites me, as a parent, to participate in his education by having us prepare parent-child duets for performance. It is quite incredible how quickly Pei Chen was able to advance him from playing melodies to eventually accompanying other students in just 2 ½ years. Pei Chen provides my son with just enough challenge to push him to always do better, while continuing to make music a source of pleasure for him. He can’t imagine having a better piano teacher than her.

We had heard that a lot of kids drop out of piano lessons. So, when our son started taking piano lessons with Pei-Chen at the age of seven we really didn't know what to expect. Two years later, we just shake our heads in amazement at how Pei-Chen has fostered our son’s creativity and passion for music, as well as how she has helped him to accomplish so many music goals. We think it all starts with a kind and healthy environment. It’s funny but little things matter. For example, by including our son in the Children’s Pedagogy Program at the University of Toronto, Pei-Chen has turned music into an incredible and fun social experience for our son. Even a small thing such as videotaping lessons shows confidence in her relationship with our son and lets us see first hand how natural the fit is between student and teacher.
As well as providing such a warm environment, Pei-Chen constantly presents our son with chances to succeed in piano. She always creates opportunities for our son to perform and helped him become a finalist for the ORMTA Audition Scholarship Recital. She helps him to quickly progress and excel in his RCM examinations. She is always fostering a love for composition in our son and encouraged him to be the youngest participant in a recent ORMTA master class on composition. Pei-Chen nurtures a love of piano in our son, and at the same time makes him realize the importance of discipline, determination, self-motivation and attention to detail.
We really believe that piano is and always will be a part of our son’s life thanks to Pei-Chen. As parents, she makes our lives easier by being flexible, accommodating, and always understanding when we need to reschedule a lesson. We are extremely appreciative of Pei-Chen and highly recommend her as a piano teacher and mentor.

Pei-Chen is our good luck charm when it comes to the piano. Ever since our son started piano lessons with Pei-Chen last spring, we have witnessed a huge improvement in his attitude towards the piano. He is now our happy, confident piano player, excelling in leaps and bounds.
We owe this all to Pei-Chen. Right from the start, she motivated him and set him on a positive path. She continues to subtly guide him towards perfection. She is always patient and delightfully kind. She always goes the extra step to help him master any piece, no matter how difficult. We are very pleased with the work Pei-Chen has done with our son. She is a very gifted instructor and recommend her whole-heartedly.

Pei-Chen has been a trusty guide along my musical journey these past two years. Although she knows the way, can see much further, and can move much faster, she did not run ahead. Pei-Chen matched her pace to mine and patiently showed me the way. Like a good coach, she progressively accelerated the pace and challenged me to keep up.
Pei-Chen is deligent, adaptive, and infinitely patient. She always explains the 'why' behind the 'how,' so that one can appreciate the real reason for executing techniques certain ways. She sets challenges that are a little beyond one's comfort zone, just enough to inspire progress, but not too much as to overwhelm. She is always nudging, never commanding, so that one develops ownership of one's own learning.
Pei-Chen is more than a teacher. She is an educator, a coach.

Regardless of the age difference, Pei-Chen is as comfortable and proficient teaching the piano to both young and old. As an adult beginner student, I have benefitted from Pei-Chen‘s professionalism, patience and skill. It has been a pleasure being under the tutelage of such a warm and caring young woman. I would highly recommend her if you ever felt the notion to try your hand at tickling the ivories.

Thank you again for hosting the class this semester, and for being flexible and supportive during my injury. It was a very educational and friendly experience, and I've definitely learnt a lot about how to become a better teacher for young beginners.
I really enjoyed the class. I've never taught piano in an official capacity and I feel more confident in approaching teaching children. |
It was a course that required a lot of work and assignments [but] I found this all very beneficial as I learned A LOT. Very good course. :) |
I really liked this course. It opened a new window to piano pedagogy for me. With musical biography, we all shared our valuable experiences to each other and leaned many things. With Method Project, it was a great opportunity to compare different methods and choose the best ones for us. By Mock teaching project, we gathered informations from all previous lessons and it was very good challenge to teach a piece in a short time. Thank you for this exciting course!
Pei–Chen did amazing even though we had to move online. She was very understanding and kind while also ensuring that we learned as much as we could. |
This course has shown me that playing the piano doesn't have to be scary, and I am excited to learn and play more. |
I find that this course really helped me to enjoy playing piano again and get some fun out of it, which I really appreciate.
Pei-Chen did a great job at creating this uplifting and helpful environment, and it was a breath of fresh air having a teacher who you know will never get frustrated at you for not being able to do something on the first try, especially in such a technically demanding program.
This course would be about more than just learning how to play a Bach Fugue through muscle memory. This course is actually dedicated to education majors, and it has been challenging, but extremely useful for me.
